Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtan a formed product of fiber-reinforced foamed plastic containing a large amount of glass fiber and with excellent mechanical properties by mixing thermo-plastic synthetic resin foaming agent and stabilizer with chopped strands of glass fiber and heating the mixture under pressure to melt it and emit foams in it and then cooling it. CONSTITUTION:To the so-called chopped strand mat made of glass fiber are added small granules or powder or ordinary pellets of thermo-plastic synthetic resin such as polyethylene, etc. and an appropriate amount of foaming agent such as azodicarbonamide, etc. and a stabilizer, if needed, of zinc stearate, etc. and the mat is uniformly dispersed and mixed. The composition is put in a mold of a required shape and heated under pressure by employing a pessurizing device and a heating device to melt the resin and make it emit foams. By this process the gaps between glass fibers are filled with the resin foam, and the composisition has the resin and foams and glass fibers uniformly distributed. Next while the composition retains plasticity, it is cooled and solidified by emplying a pressurizing device and a cooling device.
