Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to surely detect the breaking of a thread in noncontact in a method of detecting the travelling of a threadlike material on a, for example, spinning stage, by establishing an electrostatic field between a charging electrode and a signal electrode.
CONSTITUTION: A threadlike material 1 travels through a gap between a charging electrode 2 and a signal electrode 3 which are opposed together and are electrically connected through a resistor 5 having a high resistance to a DC source 4. Supporting that the voltage of the DC source 4 is "V" and the dielectric constant of the threadlike member 1 is "E", the electric charge "Q" charged between the electrodes 2, 3 is determined by Q=K.V.E. Irregularity in the diameter or density of the threadlike member 1 causes fluctuations of the dielectric constant E which produce, at the junction point of the signal electrode 3 and the high resistance resistor 5, variations in electric potential. The variations is taken out as a thread travelling signal and is indicated on a display device 7 through an amplifier 6. When the travelling of the threadlike member 1 is suspended due to the breaking thereof, the dielectric constant becomes unchanged, thereby the travelling signal disappears.
