Abstract
PURPOSE:To determine rapidly and accurately the BOD (biological oxygen demand) of compost and to control reasonably the process of compost production, by measuring generated CO2 after mixing a compost with specified amount of water and adjusting pH within specified range. CONSTITUTION:A sample of compost is mixed with 0.5-10wt% water and pH is adjusted to 6.5-7.5pH by adding N/100-N/2 acid or alkali. In some cases, addition of buffer agent is allowable. Under certain circumstances, >=1 kinds of additives among thiourea, aryl thiourea methylene blue and ammonium salt is added to suppress the nitrification, or a chelating agent such as EDTA is used for inactivation of metal, and thereafter measurement of BOD is performed. When a sample of compost ferments sufficently, or a amount of existing bacteria is small, seeds are added to the primary fermentation products. Thus the measuring is carried out within a day, which requires about 5 days in usual way, and progress of fermentation of compost is observed rapidly and accurately, and control of process is performed reasonably.
