While a white level signal SW is provided from a white level signal source 3 to the first comparator 1 as the referential signal of the brightness of the image, and a black level signal SB smaller than the white level signal SW is provided from a back level signal source 4 to the second comparator 2 as the referential signal of the darkness of the image. Thereafter the outputs from the first and second comparators 1, 2 are averaged in the integrating circuits 5, 6 and provided to a brightness indicating circuit 7.
