Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a high hardness sintered body with reduced abrasion and excellent cutting property comprising a ceramic substance containing wurtzilite type BN, a specific metal and Si3N4 in a specific amount.
CONSTITUTION: The sintered body comprises, in the vol%, 10W90 wurtzilite type (hereinafter referred to w) BN or cubic system (hereinafter referred to c) BN formed by converting a part or all thereof during sintering, 0.5W30 one or more of Al, Ti, Si Mg, Hf Zr and 9.5W89.5 ceramic substance containing 30 ore more Si3N4. Herein, BN is lower than CBN in thermal conductivity but, because there is no cleavage property, used as an excellent base material. Said wBN additive imparts conditions such as hardness, high temp. hardness, oxidation resistance, hardly reactive property with a metal to be cut, good thermal conductivity high temp. impact resistance, easily sintering property with said wBN or the like. Si3N4 is excellent in a standpoint extremely near to wBN in coefficient of expansion and an adding amount thereof is limited. Said added metal wets a surface of the wBN additive during sintering and, at the same time when it is contacted therewith, it is reacted with O2 on the surface thereof to form a heat resistant oxide and, thereby, generation of gas bubbles or the like is prevented.
