Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the S/N, by making the reflected light of the beams focused on a subject to be irradiated incident to >=2 optical materials having a reflective surface that is set at almost at the critical angle to >=2 different beams in the reflected light flux and then detecting the change of the light volume distributions of both the reflected light and the transmitted light. CONSTITUTION:The P polarized beams emitted from a light source 21 such as a laser diode, etc. are condensed on a disk 6 via a collimator lens 22, a polarizing prism 23, a 1/4 wavelength plate 24 and an objective lens 25 respectively. The reflected light goes bsckward and is reflected by the prism 23 to be reflected on the reflective surfaces of detecting prisms 27A and 27B that are set almost equal to the critical angle to the reflected light. This reflected light is made incident to photodetectors 28A and 28B, and at the same time a part of it is made incident to a photodetector 28C. The outputs of the detectors 28A and 28B apply a focus error signal 30 via a differential amplifier 29; while the output of the detector 28C applies an information signal 32 via an amplifier 31. As a result, the S/N can be increased.
