Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate high purity zirconium from an aqueous soln. by using a weakly basic anion exchange resin so as to allow zirconium to be selectively adsorbed on the resin.
CONSTITUTION: An ion exchange resin having primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups as exchange groups is used. The resin is obtd. by halomethylating a crosslinked copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene with methylchloromethyl ether or the like and reacting the copolymer with dimethylamine or polyalkylene polyamine. An acidic sulfuric acid soln. having about 0.01W1mol/l sulfuric acid concn. and contg. zirconium, alkali or alkaline earth metals, transition metals, etc. is brought into contact with said ion exchange resin to separate zirconium by adsorption on the resin. Zirconium adsorbed on the resin can be easily eliminated from the resin using a sulfuric acid soln. having about 1W3mol/l concn. as an eluent.
