Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to recirculate and reutilize the used solvent without refining, by subjecting a catalyst system comprising titanium trichloride and an organic Al compound to a specified treatment, in the production of polypropylene by slurry polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of polypropylene by slurry polymerization, catalyst pretreatment is carried out by adding an inert hydrocarbon, etc., to catalyst system comprising titanium trichloride and an organoaluminum compound and then feeding hydrogen and propylene to the system to yield at least 0.1g propylene polymer per g titanium trichloride composition. Next, propylene is polymerized by use of this pretreated catalyst system. The solvent-insoluble polymer is removed from the slurry after polymerization. The separated solvent is recirculated to and reutilized in the polymerization step without refining. This makes it possible to control the proportion of soluble polymer when the solvent used in the polymerization is recirculated and reutilized without refining.
