Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture alumina with a surely reduced quantity of α-ray radiation by conducting the operation of a deposition tank depositing aluminum hydroxide from a soln. obtd. by treating bauxite with sodium aluminate under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A sodium aluminate soln. F obtd. by treating bauxite with a sodium aluminate soln. and separating undissolved residue as red mud is fed to a deposition tank 1 capable of being kept at a constant temp., and the underflow S of a classifier 7 contg. fine aluminum hydroxide particles used as seed is added to the tank 1. The contents of the tank 1 are drawn out of a suitable part of the tank 1 and fed to a classifier 6 in an amount corresponding to the total amount of the soln. F and the underflow S. Relatively coarse aluminum hydroxide particles are taken out of the underflow H of the classifier 6 as a product, and the overflow is fed to the classifier 7. Thus, deposition is carried out in one deposition tank under conditions satisfying the equation.
