Abstract

PURPOSE: To extend the life of a piston by providing slits in a radial direction along an opening periphery of a combustion chamber of a piston to absorb heat stress by the contraction in a circumferential direction of the periphery.
CONSTITUTION: Slits 8 in a radial direction are provided along an opening periphery 7 of a combustion chamber 6 of a piston 5. The width of the slit 8 is so narrow as to close when it is subjected to high temperature and the depth of same is gradually shallowed in a radial and outward direction. Therefore, even if the slits 8 are subjected to high temperature during the combustion and are cooled rapidly by new air suctioned, the periphery 7 contracts in a circumferential direction to absorb heat stress, thereby the life of the piston 5 can be extended.
