Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high ultrasonic picture sensitivity with a low momentary transmission output in an ultrasonic transmitting and receiving device, by using a variable delay line to convert the impulse to chirp pulses for the transmission and to convert them to an impulse for the receiving. CONSTITUTION:An excited pulse signal 100 is shaped to an impulse signal 102. The impulse 102 is converted to chirp pulses 106 by an expanding circuit using a variable delay line which has a longer delay time for higher frequency components. Frequencies f1 and f2 of chirp pulses are reduced by components corresponding to a frequency fL in a frequency converting circuit. Ultra sonic waves are transmitted with a signal 108 of this conversion result to receive the echo. Since an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver has the transfer characteristics where the gain is low except DELTAf=f2-f1, low-frequency compo nents of a receiving signal 114 are reduced. A signal 116 which is subjected such frequency reverse conversion that f1-fL=f2 is true is compressed by the variable delay line to obtain pulses 118, and the amplitude is amplified (DELTAf.DELTAT) <1/2>(T=t2-t1) times.
