Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove residual chlorine from waste water at a room temp. without using a reducing agent, by a method wherein a maganese oxide such as manganese monoxide is contacted with waste water containing residual chlorine to remove the residual chlorine and the manganese oxide is separated and recovered.
CONSTITUTION: The waste water containing residual chlorine, a small amount of a water-insoluble manganese oxide such as manganese monoxide, manganese dioxide, manganese trioxide or manganese tetraoxide is added. After stirring for 5W30min to decompose and remove the residual chlorine, the manganese oxide is separated and recovered. Because the manganese oxide can decompose and remove residual chlorine without consuming itself, it can be repeatedly used after separation and recovery and, therefore, this method is extremely economical. Especially, when manganese oxide is initially added in a continuous treatmet of chlorine-containing waste water, it is unnecessary to add the same on the way of treatment.
