Abstract
PURPOSE: To offer a metallic titanium-making apparatus, easily constructable, which inhibits the invasion of TiCl4 vapor into a space between inner and outer cylinders, by mechanically detachably connecting the cover of the apparatus to the inner cylinder with fastening bolts or the like.
CONSTITUTION: In a metallic titanium-making apparatus, a groove 4 is formed at the lower surface of a cover 2 to close an outer cylinder 1. The groove 4 is engaged with a projection at the top end of an inner cylinder 5. The cover 2 is fixed to the inner cylinder 5 by fastening the cover 2 with bolts 6 or the like at positions slightly outerwards than the engaging part. A metal-made case 10 packed with a heat-insulating material 9 is attached to the lower surface of the cover 2. On the other hand, the outside end of each bolt is sealed by use of a proper means such as a cap nut 11 and water-cooled by a jacket 12 or the like. A TiCl4-feed pipe 13 is extended through the cover 2 into the inner cylinder 5. In addition, an exhaust pipe 14 and an inert gas-introducing pipe 15 are attached to the cover 2, while a rooster-shaped bottom plate 16 is attached to the lower part of the inner cylinder 5. Owing to this mechanism, the air-tightness of the apparatus is maintained during its repeated use.
