Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve sealing function of a mechanical seal for a water pump, by forming cooling-water passages in a pump shaft in the manner that they extend from the inner end of the pump shaft and is communicated to a gap between an impeller and a driven ring fitted on the pump shaft, and thereby cooling the sealing portion of a sheet ring and the driven ring. CONSTITUTION:Inside a pump shaft 4, there are formed cooling-water passages consisting of an axial passage 32 extending from the inner end of the pump shaft 4 to a position just below the inner end of a driven ring 6 that is fitted on the pump shaft 4 by a back plate of an impeller 2 and radial passages 34 extending from said position just below the inner end of the driven ring 6 to the outer surface of the pump shaft 4 where a gap 30 is formed between the driven ring 6 and impeller 2. These cooling-water passages are communicated to the gap 30. With such an arrangement, water drawn from the suction side of the pump and carried through the cooling-water passages 32, 34 cools the surroundings of the driven ring 6 while passing through the gap 30 and also cools the sealing portion of a sheet ring 16 and the driven ring 6 effectively, so that sealing function can be fulfilled satisfactorily.
