Abstract

PURPOSE:To heighten the reliability of operation of a windshield wiper, by automatically starting a wiper motor and a washer motor when more than a prescribed amount of rain water and dust has clung to the windshield, to wipe them off and by making the set ranges of light receivers variable depending on the contamination. CONSTITUTION:A light emission unit 6 consisting of a light emitter 6a and a receiver 6b is secured in an appropriate position on the body of a vehicle in front of its windshield. A light reception unit 8 is mounted with a prism on the inside surface of the windshield so that the unit, the prism and the windshield are in tight contact with each other. The outputs of light receivers 81-8n of the light reception unit 8 are applied to a central processing unit 20 through a multiplexer 10, an amplifier 12, a band-pass filter 14, a detector 16 and an A/D converter 18. When rain drops cling to the windshield, the quantity of light received by the light receivers 81-8n of the light reception unit 8 increases. When dust or the like clings to the windshield, the quantity of received light decreases. On the basis of these changes in the quantity of received light, the central processing unit 20 controls the driving of a wiper motor 22 and a washer motor 24 and compensates the upper and lower limits of the set ranges of the light receivers 81-8n.
