Abstract

PURPOSE: Eye drop intraocular hypotensor or remedy for glaucoma that contains demecolcine (N-methyl-N-desacetylcolchicine), thus showing no side-effects and no eye-irritation.
CONSTITUTION: The objective intraocular hypotensor or remedy for glaucoma is an eye drop containing demecolcine of 0.001W2.0, preferably 0.01W1.0wt% concentration. Conventional remedies for glaucoma cause side-effects such as corneal anesthesia, pulse rate reduction or loss of memory, on the contrary, this remedy is free from these deffects and shows higher intraocular hypotensive activity than colchicine itself. The intraocular hypotensor is preferably used as an eye drop in the form of an aqueous solution, sol, oily preparation, ointment or gradually releasing agent made by adsorbing on a polymer. Demecolcine is soluble in water and an aqueous eye drop is readily prepared and, when necessary, an isotonizing agent, buffering agent, antiseptic or thickener may be added thereto.
