Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a water-retaining contact lens with superior characteristics by converting ketal of sugar alcohol having hydroxyl gruops into (meth)acrylate, molding a copolymer of the resulting monomer with a hydrophilic monomer, and acid-treating the molded copolymer. CONSTITUTION:Sugar alcohol having at least 3 hydroxyl groups is modified to ketal with a ketone compound, and a polymerizing group is introduced into at least 1 remaining hydroxyl group, and the resulting monomer is copolymerized with other hydrophilic monomer. The prepared copolymer is molded into the shape of a contact lens, and the molded copolymer is acid-treated. The preferred sugar alcohol is represented by the formula (where n is 1-5), and 2-hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate, 2-hydroxy-propyl (meth)acrylate, polyehtylene glycol mono(meth)acrylate or the like is preferably used as the hydrophilic monomer.
