Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the vertical movement of a skirt easy and to make the recovery of gases of high concns. of CO possible by sealing the upper part of the skirt with sealing cloth in place of water sealing of a skirt sealing device. CONSTITUTION:One end of sealing cloth 15 is fixed to the top edge of a skirt 2 and the other end is fixed to a sealing member 14 overhung from the side face of a hood 3, whereby the upper part of the hood 2 is sealed tightly. The cloth 15 is stretchable heat resistant cloth having no air permeability. First, the skirt 2 is lowered to narrow the space between the same and the port of a converter 1 as far as possible. The cloth 15 drops along the inside of its protecting plate 16, thereby sealing the upper part of the skirt 5 tightly. When O2 is blown into the converter 1, the gas produced by this is induced in a direction B into the hood 3. Part of said gas infiltrates the upper part of the skirt 1 and fills the same in a direction A. The dust drops along the slope of the cloth 15. In spite of an abrupt change of the pressure in the hood 3, the airtightness is maintained by the strength of the cloth 15 per se and the plate 16 and withstands substantial pressure. Upon completion of the blowing, the cloth 15 is lifted by the skirt 2 and its ascending and descending are not hampered.
