Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure sampling time for an image pickup apparatus in a device that makes focus detection basing on the change of image position pursuant to the change of pupil position by rotating a light shielding plate that changes pupil position intermittently. CONSTITUTION:When the position of a pupil is changed in an object lens system, the position of an image which is out of focus position also changes. This phenomenon can be utilized for focus detection. However, sampling by an image pickup element has been difficult as the image changes continuously when the pupil is provided on a plate that moves continuously. Accordingly, light transmitting holes 31-34 that change the position of the pupil to symmetrical position in the pupil alternately are provided in a plate 30 that rotates intermittently around a point O which lies out of the pupil so as to cause intermittent shifting of the image. Thus, sampling time can be secured even when an image pickup element is used.
