Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a carrier which is stable and especially highly sensitive to optical measurement from a copolymer containing a specified amount of COOH on the surface thereof, prepared by polymerizing a mixture of an aromatic vinyl compound as a major component and an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid as a minor component. CONSTITUTION:A monomer mixture of 97-99wt% aromatic vinyl compound, 1- 3wt% of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated caboxylic acid and othe ethylenically unsaturated compounds (e.g., an acrylate ester, acrylonitrile) is emulsion-polymerized using a proper amount of alkyl mercaptan as a polymerization initiator to form a polymer latex with an average particle diameter of about 0.5-0.7mu containing 0.01-0.3meq/g of COOH on the surface of a polymer particle. A sensitized latex is prepared in a PBS buffer solution with a concentration of the latex polymer particles of 0.25% and used for the agglutionation reaction of a rheumatism factor in serum. The sensitized latex remains stable for several months with an excellent sensitivity.
