Abstract

PURPOSE: To select cells having improved specific properties, by dividing cultivated plant cellular masses into fragments of specified square size, growing and multiplying the cellular mass fragments in a flat container, and repeating the selecting steps of cellular masses having improved specific properties from the multiplied cellular mass group.
CONSTITUTION: Cultivated plant cellular masses obtained by cultivating a callus derived from tissues, e.g. roots, stems, or leaves, of a higher plant are divided into small cellular mass fragments of 2W10mm square and cultivated stationarily in a transparent flat container. Cellular masses having improved specific properties are selected from the resultant multiplied cellular mass group. The selecting steps are repeated plural times to give cells having the improve specific properties. The size of the cellular mass fragments is more preferably 2W5mm square.
