Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the digestibility of roughage and to enable the utilization of lignin in the preparation of roughage, by impregnating cellulosic materials with water or an aqueous solution of caustic soda, and contacting the treated cellulosic materials with ozone.
CONSTITUTION: Cellulosic materials 1, e.g. straw such as rice straw, bagasse, corn stover, etc. are crushed with a crusher 2, and mixed in a mixing tank 3 with water or an aqueous solution of caustic soda supplied from the solution tank 4. The cellulosic materials discharged from the mixing tank 3 are fed to the ozone reactor 5, and brought into contact with ozone generated in an ozone generator 6.
