Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the regeneration of a heat resistant filter body impregnated with an alkali metal compd. possible without consuming a large atm. of the impregnated compd. by passing through a waste gas through said filter body to capture fine particles and injecting water in the clogged state. CONSTITUTION:While the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine 1 flows through a filter 3, fine particles consisting of carbon particles contained therein are captured in a filter body 6, and the gas is released into the atmosphere. When the body 6 attains the prescribed clogged state on progression of capturing of the fine particles, a pressure sensor 14 senses the exhaust pressure in the exhaust pipe 2 and operates a controller 5 which starts a pressure feed pump 10. Water is ejected from the leading end 13 of an injection pipe 12 to wet the fine particles captured on the body 6. The wet fine particles come into contact with the alkali metal compd. or copper compd. impregnated with the body 6 and forms the aq. soln. thereof. When the prescribed temp. is attained, this soln. burns in a short time. When the fine particles of the body 6 disappear and the exhaust pressure in the pipe 2 drops, the controller 5 operates to stop the pump 10, thereby stopping the ejection of the water.
