Abstract

PURPOSE:To retard formation of nitrogen oxides during combustion by providing projections in the fuel burning zone in contact with flames being made red hot. CONSTITUTION:The flames from the coal burners 4 make the projections 5 and 5' red-hot. With combustion kept on under this state, these projections begin to act as heat transfer medium to accelerate burning of pulverized coal with the result that the volatile matter contained in the coal is caused to evaporate faster and that the substances generated from nitrogen contained therein such as NH3 and HCN decomposed quickly into N2 gas. In this way, the formation of nitrogen oxides is retarded remarkably.
