PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of air table phenomenon, by putting only both edge parts of a running sheet between upper and lower rolls and tentering the sheet directly. CONSTITUTION:Two sets of upper and lower rolls are arranged symmetrically right and left so as to put only both edge parts of a running sheet S between. Right and left lower rolls are rotated synchronously each other, being connected by the intermediate part of an expander roll 3. Directions of right and left rolls are directed obliquely outside by an angle theta generating a proper tension T of width direction to the sheet between rolls. By supporting the upper roll 5 by a floating arm 7 in free up and down motion a force advancing the edge part of the sheet S obliquely outside is decided by the frictional force obtained by multiplying the weight of the upper roll 5 with the frictional coefficient between the sheet and the roll, and the tension T of width direction of the sheet S is decided by its partial force of width direction. Thus, generation of air table phenomenon is prevented.
