Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled stable polymer useful as an additive used in paper- making, by reacting an acrylamide polymer with a hypohalite or a halogen gas and an inorganic alkali and then reacting the product with a specified diamine.
CONSTITUTION: The titled polymer is produced by reacting an acrylamide polymer with a hypohalite (e.g., NaOCl) or a halogen gas (e.g., chlorine gas) and an inorganic alkali (e.g., NaOH) and then reacting the product with a diamine of the formula, wherein A is a 2W5C saturated bivalent group R1 is H or a 1W4C alkyl and R2 and R3 are 1W4C alkyl groups or can be combined together with the N atom to form a heterocyclic ring (e.g., dimethylaminoethylamine). The tert. amino groups introduced through urea linkages according to this process are stable for 3 months in water at room temperature. This polymer is employed as, for example, a paper-making additive such as freeness improver, filler retention aid, size fixation aid, coagulant or paper-strengthening agent.
