Abstract

PURPOSE: A dialkylamine and formaldehyde are made to act on a polyacrylamide aqueous solution and the reaction mixture is neutralized with an acid and made acidic to produce the titled polymer suitably used as a flocculant, because of its being free from bad odor and steep reaution in cationization degree by dilution with water.
CONSTITUTION: A dialkylamine such as dimethylamine and formaldehyde, e.g. in the form of formalin, are added to a polyacrylamide aqueous solution and they heated at 40W70°C for 20W60min to effect the Mannich reaction shown by the equation (R, R' are alkyl group), thus causing the aminomethylation of polyacrylamide. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is acidified with an acid such as hydrochloric acid to produce the objective polymer with stabilized cationization degree, i.e., the constant amount of cationic groups.
