Abstract

PURPOSE:To make positive skew detection possible by a machine for arranging sheets of paper such as bills, in which machine the skew value of the sheets is determined based on a length of a side calculated from counted values of a plurality of light projector and receiver outputs normal to a conveying path. CONSTITUTION:A sheet P of paper is conveyed, and as the sheet shuts successively off the light receivers 17-11, counters 27'-21' start successively counting. A CPU40 selects the counter 21' by a selector 30, and detects the shutting period between the light receivers 17, 11 to find a skewed distance la according to the prescribed equation and to find a skew value theta deg. from a distance lb between the light receivers 11, 17. The correctness thereof is determined as follows: counted values of the counters 21-17 are selected to find the lengths in the conveying direction, the maximum value thereof is defined as a length L of one side of the sheet, and if Lmin<=L<=Lmax, it is judged that the calculated skew value theta deg. is correct. In case there is fold, the L corresponding to the light receiver 11 or 17 would not satisfy the formula, and therefore it is judged that the theta deg. is not correct.
