Abstract

PURPOSE:To promote evaporation of gas mixture and accelerate its flow velocity, by providing a cylinder head inner surface which forms a ceiling common to intake and exhaust passages and a side upper surface of a cylinder block in a predetermined height and position, respectively. CONSTITUTION:In a side valve type gasoline engine whose intake valve 3 and exhaust valve 9 are juxtaposed at the side portion of a cylinder 6, a port through which intake air is introduced into the cylinder 6 and exhaust gas is discharged thereform, that is, an inner surface of a cylinder head 4 forming a ceiling surface of a passage common to intake air and exhaust gas is inclined so that its inner surface becomes higher on the side of the exhaust valve 9 than that of the intake valve 3, and also an opening edge 15 of a cylinder block 1 being in contact with the piston 7 is formed at the lower position than a top dead centre is. Therefore, the most part of gas mixture introduced into the combustion chamber 5 at the suction stroke flows in the direction of the valve 9 and promotes its evaporation, and at the top dead centre, its low velocity is accelerated due to contraction by the piston 7.
