Abstract
PURPOSE:To extract a picture area containing one or more coupled picture element areas, by coupling an adjacent black picture element of a binary coded picture, and unifying these respective coupled picture element areas to a larger area. CONSTITUTION:A document is scanned by a scanner 100, and density of a picture element is read. A picture element density signal outputted from the scanner is binary coded by a quantizer 102, and is accumulated in a buffer 104 temporarily. A processor 106 executes the coupling processing of a black picture element as to a binary picture data in the buffer, and derives a coordinate data of the extracted coupled picture element area in a memory 110. The processor executes the unifying processing of the coupled picture element areas derives in the memory 110, and extracts a character line. A coordinate data of each extracted character line is outputted to the outside or is saved in the memory 110 temporarily. The picture element coupling processing and the unifying processing of the coupled picture element areas are executed by interlocking a maximum/minimum deciding circuit 108 to the processor 106 in order to raise the processing efficiency.
