Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively form a high-quality polyvinyl ester resin saponificate (especially, a saponificate with a low degree of saponification) free form a salt such as sodium acetate, by carrying out the saponfication by use of an ion exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: An ion exchange resin[an OH type ion exchange resin (pref., Duolite A-101D, Chemical Process Corp.)]is added to a solution of a polyvinyl ester resin (e.g., vinyl acetate (co)polymer) in a lower alcohol (e.g., methanol or butanol), and the mixture is agitated and separated from the ion exchange resin. The alcohol is vaporized from the resulting solution to obtain the desired saponificate.
