PURPOSE:To improve the reliability, etc., of communication by dividing a signal frame into information fields and control fields by turns and by transmitting voice and character data other than facsimile information by using the control fields which become free areas in a communication phase. CONSTITUTION:For the transmission of facsimile signals between a transmission- side and a reception-side facsimile terminal through a couple of transmitting and receiving circuits, the signal frame is constituted by arranging control fields N1, N2... and information fields D1, D2... by turns. The control fields N1, N2... of the signal frame each include a synchronous bit F for frame synchronization and a status bit S for displaying the state of a terminal and a network to form one octet. Then, the control fields N1, N2... are used in a call setting phase and a call disconnecting phase. In a facsimile communication phase, the information fields D1, D2... are used to transmit voice and character data other than facsimile information by using control fields which become free areas in a communication phase.
