Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a dot printer which has been reduced in weight and uses a narrower ribbon by arranging a ribbon cartidge which contains an ink ribbon divided into strips of plural colors in the direction of width so that its longitudinal direction becomes the same as the direction of arrangement of dot printing elements. CONSTITUTION:Plural pieces of dot print elements arranged in at least one row are provided on a print head 10 in the direction rectangular to its spacing direction and a ribbon cartridge containing an ink ribbon 1 divided into plural colors in the direction of width is arranged so that its longitudinal direction becomes the same as the direction of arrangement of dot print elements. When it is required to space the head 10 while changing a print color, the rotation of a ratchet wheel 16 and a driven disk 15 is stopped by hanging a stop pawl 17 on the ratchet wheel 16, then by the movement of a carriage 6, the head 10 performs relative motion for the ribbon 1. When it is not necessary to change a color, the relative motion of the ribbon 1 and the head 10 is made zero without hanging the stop pawl 17 on the ratchet wheel 16.
