Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled composition having excellent coatability and good penetration and adhesion to a casting mold and being free from formation of cracks or peeling in the mold coating layer when the mold is dried and when a molten metal is cast, by mixing a specific water-soluble resin with a mold coating base material.
CONSTITUTION: 0.1mol of the carboxyl group of a polymer (e.g., isobutylene- maleic anhydride copolymer) that has a molecular weight of 100,000W1,000,000 and contains carboxyl groups or functional groups convertible into a carboxyl group is reacted with 0.05W2mol of an alkaline earth metal compound[e.g., Mg(OH)2] in an aqueous medium to form a water-soluble resin. Subsequently, a mold coating base material (e.g, scale-like graphite) or the one containing a binder (e.g., montmorillonite) is blended with 0.05W20wt% above-mentioned water-soluble resin.
EFFECT: This composition neither dissolves the binder for a casting nold mor give rise to any trouble due to sand burning or putrefaction.
