Abstract
PURPOSE: Sulfite spent liquor, adjusted in pH, is oxidized at a specific temperature until the pH becomes a specific value and the product is added to phenol by a certain amount to give an inexpensive adhesive for wood construction materials with high adhesion performance.
CONSTITUTION: Sulfite spent liquor (abbreviated to SSL hereinafter) is adjusted in pH to 4W10 and oxidized with oxygen or air at 140W180°C until the pH becomes 3W6 to prepare a modified ligninsulfonate salt. The resultant product (A) is added simultaneously when the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde (B) is conducted to effect copolycondensation reaction or after precondensation between them to give the objective adhesive of phenol-liginin-formaldehyde. The amount of component A is 10W50wt% based on the component B in the system. SSL is preferably from needle-leaf trees and the base is a Na or Mg salt.
