Abstract
PURPOSE:To form the oxide film of Fe3O4 on a surface by a method wherein a tool made of high speed steel of which the surface is coated with carbon is entered into salts heated to a predetermined temp. to be held therein for a desired time and, after air drying and washing, immersed in an oil. CONSTITUTION:Carbon or an oil is coated on the surface of the high speed steel tool, for example, an SKH drill, a parallel bite or the like and the treated tool is immersed in a salt bath of a potassium nitrate.sodium nitrite agent or a potassium nitrate.sodium nitride agent to be held therein for 10-30min. The treated tool is taken out from the salt bath and, after air drying and washing, immersed in an oil. Because oxygen is deficient in the salt bath, the oxide film of Fe2O3 is decomposed and the oxide film of Fe3O4 is formed and cutting property of said tool is enhanced.
