Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain ribbed-substrates with a simple structure and available in optional depth and density by forming expanded graphite into ribbed-substrates which have a diffusion function toward reaction areas of fluid fuel or fluid pro- oxidant. CONSTITUTION:Expanded graphite, which is produced by expanding a lameller graphite compound rapidly at 950 deg.C, is compressed and formed at the normal temperature with forming metal molds that have grooves on one side to form rib, 4, 5. The formed ribbed-substrates 19 have an optional density distribution, i.e., the ribs 4, 5 sections have a low density, and the bottoms of fluid flow path grooves 7, 8 have a high density. The ribbed-substrates 19 are formed with electrodes 2, 3 into one unit respectively, and a separator 18 is arranged between them to prevent mixing of fluid fuel and fluid pro-oxident, thus making up a unit cell. A number of unit cells are stacked to produce a fuel cell.
