Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 3-substituted propyl halide of formula I [X is halogen; R is group of formula II or III (R1 is lower alkyl or aryl)].
EXAMPLE: 5-Ethylthio-5-ethylsulfinylhexyl chloride.
USE: An excellent reagent for forming the side chain part of pentoxifylline. The raw material dihalobutane is readily available.
PROCESS: A dihalobutane or formula IV (X' is halogen) is reacted with an alkyl (or aryl) 1-alkyl(or aryl)thioethyl sulfoxide of formula V in the presence of a base, e.g. lithium diisopropylamide, to give a 5-alkyl (or aryl) thio-5-alkyl (or aryl) sulfinylhexyl halide of formula VI, which is then isolated and heat-treated to afford the compound of formula I. A solvent, e.g. THF, is preferably used.
