NEW MATERIAL:An ester of formulaI(R and R' are 2W10C straight chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: p-(p'-Hexylphenyl)-O-cyanophenyl trans-4-hexylcyclohexylcarbonate.
USE: A liquid crystal compound, capable of reducing the steepness γ (a ratio between the saturation voltage and the threshold voltage) on mixing with a liquid crystal composition exhibiting the positive dielectric aniosotropy due to the negative dielectric anisotropy thereof, having a high clear point and exhibiting a relatively wide liquid crystal temperature range.
PROCESS: A 3-bromo-4-methoxy-4'-alkylcarbonylbiphenyl of formula III (R" is a straight chain alkyl having one less carbon atom than R') obtained from a compound of formula II as a starting substance is reduced to give a compound of formula IV, which is then esterified to afford a compound of formula V. The resultant compound of formula V is then reacted with cuprous cyanide to give the compound of formulaI.
