Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a zwitter-ionic polyethyleneimine which has excellent heat stability, compatibility with thermoplastic resins and a good effect on the modification of synthetic resins, by subjecting an acylated derivative of a branched polyethyleneimine to a quaternization treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An acylated derivative of a branched polyethyleneimine is subjected to a quaternization treatment to provide a zwitter-ionic polyethyleneimine having structural units of formulasIand II wherein R1 is H, 1W25C alkyl, aryl; R2 is alkylene, phenylene, aralkylene; Y- is a mono- or bivalent anionic group; R2 is H, a 1W26C alkyl, aryl, polyoxyalkylene chain, N-acylpolyethyleneimine chain, or a group of -R2-Y-. Pref. the polyethyleneimine has the repeating units in such a proportion that the structural unit of formulaIis 1W90%, that of formula II is 10W99%, and the sum of the both units is 11W100%.
USE: Modifying agent for synthetic resins, detergent, cosmetic, shampoo, paper- treating agent, textile-treating agent, antibacterial agent, antiseptic agent, high- molecular drug, agricultural chemicals, etc.
