Abstract
PURPOSE: To maintain good optical transmission chracteristics without receiving any damage through irradiation of neutron rays by providing a coating layer mixed with specific boron compounds to an optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: A primary coat 3, an intermediate layer 4 consisting of B metal, a B compound such as B4C, BN, B2O3 or their mixture, and PVC, polyethylene, etc., and an outer layer 5 of nylon or the like are provided on an optical fiber 2 consisting essentially of SiO2. Even if the optical fiber formed in this way is used in a place such as atomic reactor where it receives irradiation of neutron rays, it does not receive any damage owing to neutron rays, its optical transmission characteristics are maintained, and the light loss of the optical fiber does not change.
