Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare a round rod of porous glass matrix having lowered outer diameter variation, in high stability along the axial direction, by inclining the directions of a synthesis torch and the flame blasted from the torch against the rotational axis of the porous matrix. CONSTITUTION:Raw materials of glass and combustible gas are introduced to a synthesis torch 41, and subjected to hydrolysis reaction and thermoxidation reaction in the torch to form a porous matrix 43 composed of attached and deposited particles of synthetic glass. The variation of the outer diameter of the formed porous matrix 43 can be reduced by inclining the directions of the synthesis torch 41 and the center axis 45 of the flame 42 at an angle theta of 10-60 deg. against the rotational axis of the porous matrix 43. Since the porous matrix thus obtained has reduced variation of the outer diameter, the various characteristics of the optical fiber obtained by heating and defoaming the matrix 43, e.g. variation in the core/outer diameter ratio, transmission loss, bandwidth, etc. can be improved.
