Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the alteration of an input-to-output characteristic depending the speed of a vehicle even if its steering wheel is slowly operated, by providing a variable throttle valve between the hydraulic cylinder and control valve of an automobile power steering gear.
CONSTITUTION: Oil pressure from a pump is applied to a control valve 10 through an oil passage 23 so that a pressure difference is made between oil passages 25, 26 by a valve 12 operated by the driver, thereby actuating a hydraulic cylinder 37. When a hydraulic signal depending on the vehicle velocity or the like is transmitted to an oil chamber 30, the element 29 of a characteristic adjusting valve 27 provided between the control valve 10 and the hydraulic cylinder 37 is moved rightward to reduce the cross-sectional areas of orifices R1, R2 in a passage connecting the control valve 10 and the hydraulic cylinder 37 to each other and open another orifice R3 which is for connection between the right and left. As a result, an oil pressure difference acting to the hydraulic cylinder 37 becomes smaller than an oil pressure difference caused by the control valve 10, thus altering an input-to-output characteristic. Since the variable throttle valve is used for the alteration of the characteristic, always sure operation is attained.
