Abstract

PURPOSE:To actuate a crew restriction apparatus by a method wherein a speed change at a collision is detected as an attenuation force generated by a damper, and a collision energy is detected as a deformation quantity of an impact energy absorption member and further, when the detected quantity exceeds a constant value, a switch is actuated. CONSTITUTION:When a traveling automobile causes a collision which generates a speed variation more than a certain value, then, first, a front bumper 2 retreats receiving a collision load and a damper 3 makes a movable piston 5 withdraw into a fixed cylinder 4 and further, generates an attenuation force against the retreat movement of the front bumper 2. As a result, the load imposed on the fixed cylinder 4 is borne by an impact energy absorption member 9. When the attenuation force exceeds a defined value, the cylinder 4 retreats along with an acceleration sensing switch 14 while giving a deformation to a member 9. When the acceleration exceeds a given value, a weight 17 of the switch 12 separates from a magnet 19 and it rotates forward to contact with both contacts 18, 18'. With this, the switch 12 is turned ON, and a crew restriction apparatus operates, thus, rapidly, restricting an inertia movement of the crew.
