Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An adenine nucleoside expressed by formula I [R1 is azido or amino; R2 and R3 are H or protecting group (e.g. aralkyl such as trityl or benzyl, or acyl such as acetyl or benzoyl)].
EXAMPLE: 9-(2-Azido-2,3-dideoxy-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)adenine.
USE: An agent for biochemical research or a synthetic intermediate for physiologically active substances such as 5'-phosphate derivatives thereof which have an inhibitory action on a nucleic acid synthesizing enzyme.
PROCESS: A 2'-0-alkylsulfonyl or allylsulfonylcordycepin of formula II (R4 is alkylsulfonyl or allylsulfonyl) is reacted with an alkali azide, preferably in a solvent, e.g. pyridine, at about 100°C for several hour to give a 9-(2-azido-2,3-dideoxy-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)adenine of formula III.
