Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the productivity of sponge iron produced by crude reduction process in a tunnel kiln by a method wherein carbonaceous material with a high and low gasification reactivity is arranged so that the former is placed in the inner and the latter in the outer side of an iron oxide powder layer.
CONSTITUTION: Iron oxide powder is cylindrically filled in a heat-resistant container, a reducing material to produce CO gas is filled in the inner and outer parts of the cylindrical iron oxide powder, and the container is heated from the outside so that sponge iron is produced by crude reduction. At this time, the inner side of the cylindrical iron oxide powder is filled with a reducing agent which accelerates CO gas generating reaction at a temperature below the crude reduction temperature, or with a filler containing such a reducing agent; the outer side is filled with a reducing agent which accelerates CO gas generating reaction at the crude reduction temperature, or a filler containing the same reducing agent. In this manner, prior to occurrence of the crude reduction reaction, CO gas is diffused in the container, thereby shortening the reaction time for crude reduction,.
