Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful for removing the side effects of an adrenocortical hormone agent industrially and advantageously, by treating an extract of a plant belonging to the genus Bupleurum with a polystyrene resin adsorbent of giant network structure, and eluting the adsorbed substance with an alcohol, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A dried fragment of the terrestrial part of a plant belonging to the genus Bupleurum is defatted with n-hexane, etc. under heating, dried, and extracted with water and/or an alcohol, e.g. methanol. The extract or an aqueous solution of the concentrate or dilute solution in an alcohol is then treated with a polystyrene resin adsorbent of giant network structure to adsorb saponin on the resin. The adsorbed substance is eluted with an alcohol or hydrous alcohol, and the eluate is evaporated to dryness. Thus, the aimed substance of light yellowish brown powder is obtained. Preferably, the alcohol concentrations in the dilute alcohol solution for adsorption and hydrous alcohol for elution are 30% or less and 50% or more respectively.
