Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a lithographic plate free from a ground stain and having superior printing resistance by carrying out development in the presence of 2-mercaptobenzoic acid or a substituted derivative thereof as an anion forming compound and at least one of alkanolamines and cyclic imides. CONSTITUTION:A photographic material having a silver halide emulsion layer and a physical developing nucleus layer is developed in the presence of one or more among alkanolamines represented by formula I (where R1 is 2-6C hydroxyalkyl, each of R2 and R3 is H, 2-6C hydroxyalkyl, benzyl, 1-6C alkyl or a group represented by formula II, each of X and Z is H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C hydroxyalkyl, and n is 1-6) and cyclic imide compounds represented by formula III (where Z is a group of atoms consisting of 1-3 N atoms and the balance 5- or 6-membered cyclic imide forming atoms) in combination with 2-mercaptobenzoic acid or a substituted derivative thereof as an anion forming compound, thus obtaning wear resistant lithographic plate having superior lipophilic properties at the image area and superior hydrophilic properties at the nonimage area.
