Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled emulsion having high stability and cationic characteristics, economically, by the emulsion polymerization of an ethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing specific 1- vinylimidazole derivative as a copolymer unit.
CONSTITUTION: A modified polyvinyl alcohol containing a group of formula I or formula II (R1, R2 and R3 are H, lower alkyl or phenyl; R4 is lower alkyl, X is an electronegative group capable of forming a salt with imidazolinium nitrogen) is dissolved in distilled water, and the pH of the solution is adjusted to acidic by adding an aqueous solution of acetic acid thereto. The objective emulsion is prepared by polymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer (e.g. vinyl acetate) in the above solution in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator under heating and stirring.
USE: Agent for increasing paper strength, binder of nonwoven fabrics, textile finishing agent, sizing agent, adhesive, paint, material for building and construction, etc.
