Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain indole, useful as a starting material of perfumes, dyes, pharmaceuticals and tryptophan, in high yield, without lowering the catalytic activity, by heating acetaldehyde, phenylhydrazone together with a silica-magnesia catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Acetaldehyde phenylhydrazone is heated preferably at 230W320°C together with a silica-magnesia catalyst, containing preferably 5W60%, esp. 10W 50% at magnecia, to give indole in high yield without lowering the catalytic activity. This effect is based on the synergistic effect of the development of particular oxidizing sites and the increase of the surface area, which are characteristic to the silica- magnesia two-component oxide. The above catalyst is prepared from stabilized silica sol and fine powder of magnesia.
